Australia Supports Better Service Delivery in Aceh

Local communities in Aceh Besar will now be served by a single counter when taking care of their identity cards, birth, death and marriage certificates as well as some licences. This one-stop-service is now available in Peukan Bada, Lhoong, and Mesjid Raya sub-district offices.

The Australian Government, through the Australia Indonesia Partnership for Reconstruction and Development (AIPRD), introduced this one-stop service delivery approach through its local governance program, LOGICA.

“Three local governments in Aceh Besar are leading the way in serving the needs of their communities by making local services easier to access and more transparent,” said Australia’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Bill Farmer.

“The heads of local governments in Peukan Bada, Lhoong and Mesjid Raya are setting an example for other local governments to follow. People need to go to only one location to get all the services from their local government. The fees and requirements are fully transparent. They no longer need to travel long distances to the district office,” said Mr Farmer.

AIPRD handed over three new Australia-funded sub-district offices to the Bupati of Aceh Besar District, Dr Bukhari Daud on Thursday. The offices provide facilities for the sub-district heads (Camat) and staff to deliver services to their communities. Australia helped fund the construction of these offices worth over Rp 2.1 billion (A$300,000).

AIPRD has been supporting 17 sub-district governments over the past 18 months to identify their roles, responsibilities and effective service delivery models.

“We are working with sub-district governments (kecamatan) to understand the needs of tsunami-affected villagers. Strong local governments are an investment in sustainable communities,” said Mr Farmer.

Australia has already allocated over Rp 1.7 trillion (A$250 million) to relief and reconstruction in Aceh and North Sumatra.
