Internationally acclaimed Australian video art exhibition opens in Yogyakarta

Yogyakarta art lovers welcomed the arrival of internationally acclaimed Australian video art exhibition, Streetworks: inside outside Yokohama, at the Jogja Gallery today.

Streetworks showcases cutting edge film and video pieces depicting urban landscapes and sports like skate-boarding and break-dancing by two of Australia’s most prominent young new media artists, Craig Walsh and Shaun Gladwell.

“I am very excited to have the opportunity to share my work with Indonesian audiences for the first time,” Mr Walsh said at the exhibition opening.

“It’s a privilege for me to meet Yogyakarta artists working in video art and I’m impressed by their interest and energy,” said Mr Walsh, whose work, Classification Pending, is to be installed under London Bridge later this year.

Conceived for the Yokohama Art Triennale and having successfully toured Japan, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore, Streetworks is an exhibition that moves laterally around concepts of performance and documentation, high art and low art, sub culture and pop culture, the staged and the real.

Australian Minister for Home Affairs The Hon Bob Debus opened Streetworks in Jakarta early this month with artist Shaun Gladwell and musician Dhani at the National Gallery of Indonesia.

Streetworks is showing at Jogja Gallery from 20 August to 7 September.

Streetworks is sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and the Australia International Cultural Council under IN2OZ: Creative Australia. This year-long program is strengthening cultural ties between Indonesia and Australia.
