Australia Provides Support to Community Fishing Projects in Maluku Province

An Australian Embassy official will travel to Maluku Province this week to visit two community projects that have received funding support from the Australian Embassy.

Australia worked with local community organisations, Yayasan Tiara Pusaka and Yayasan Sauwa Sejahtera, to support fish cultivation in two communities on Saparua and Seram islands. Gillian Kenny, Third Secretary, will visit Negeri Haria (Saparua Island) and Sanahu village (Seram Island) on 10 and 11 November to view first hand the benefits the projects are providing these local communities.

“Australia’s support for these projects allows fishermen to fish closer to home and provides a more reliable livelihood in those communities,” Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Bill Farmer said.

The Australian Embassy’s Direct Aid Program is a small-grants scheme which provides funds for community groups and non-government organisations engaged in development activities on a not-for-profit basis.

“The primary objective of the Direct Aid Program is to promote sustainable development initiatives that help communities boost their living standards,” Mr Farmer said.

Ms Kenny will also meet with local officials and community leaders in Ambon and visit Pattimura University.
