Indonesian filmmaker Garin Nugroho joins the Sydney Film Festival and the Adelaide Film Festival 2007

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer announced today that noted Indonesian filmmaker Garin Nugroho will be a special guest at the Sydney Film Festival from 9-11 June.

Ambassador Farmer said, “The Sydney Film Festival is a showcase for contemporary cinema from Australia and around the world. The Festival is a major cultural event on the city's social calendar and one of the world's longest running film festivals.”

“Garin Nugroho is a very talented and prolific filmmaker. He has created many movies that have won international awards and created great interest in Indonesian film. He has many fans in Australia. His appearance as a special guest at the Sydney Film Festival and the Adelaide Film Festival is a wonderful opportunity for Australians to learn more about Indonesian cinema,” said Ambassador Farmer.

“This is another example of the ongoing and exciting cultural collaboration between Australia and Indonesia in many areas of the arts,” he added.

Garin will be in Australia from 9 until 14 June 2007, where his world-famous movie, “Opera Jawa”, will be screened in Sydney on 10 June 2007.

Garin’s well-known 2004 film, “Of Love and Eggs”, will be the feature at a special event screening for the Adelaide Film Festival in South Australia on 12 June 2007. Garin will be the special guest at this screening, which is already sold out.

Garin’s visit to Australia is sponsored by the Australia-Indonesia Institute, an Australian Government initiative.
