Australia Marks 70 Years of Indonesian Independence

The Australian Embassy in Jakarta will hold a series of events to mark Indonesia’s 70th Anniversary of Independence. Australia is proud to have been one of the first countries to recognize Indonesia’s independence in 1949.

“As Indonesia’s closest neighbor and long-standing friend, we want to pay tribute to Indonesia’s struggle for independence that has forged the dynamic regional leader that Indonesia has become,” Ambassador Paul Grigson said.

“Our bilateral cooperation, our education and people-to-people links continue to grow. I look forward to Australia deepening its economic cooperation with Indonesia,” he said.

Australia will honour this great milestone with the following events in Jakarta and Yogyakarta:

Tuesday 18 August
Launch of Photographic Exhibition “Indonesia’s Struggle for Independence: The Australian Connection” – at Alun Alun Grand Indonesia, Central Jakarta. The exhibition will run from 18– 24 August.

Thursday 20 August
Celebrate 70 Under the Stars, a gala event with CAUSINDY, featuring Tulus and Daniel Mananta, Lucy in the Sky, Jakarta

Friday 21 August
“Indonesia Calling” film screening, Museum Benteng Vredeburg, Yogyakarta

Saturday 22 August
Indonesian Ballet Gala, featuring Australian dancers Juliet Burnett and Christopher Hill, Ciputra Artpreneur Theater Jakarta

Monday 24 August
Masters of Indonesia Portraiture – Award presentation to Galeri Nasional, exhibition opens 24 August

Monday, 31 August
Black Armada - Australia Supports Upholding Indonesian Independence Exhibition – Museum Benteng Vredeburg, Yogyakarta
