14 September 2023

The Australian Embassy in Jakarta celebrated International Literacy Day 2023 with a story time session with award-winning Australian author David O’Shea at the Australian Reading Corner (ARC), Jakarta Library, Cikini.

More than 50 children from SD Kebun Jeruk 10, SD Santa Ursula Jakarta, and TaCiTa Jakarta, a read aloud community, enjoyed the adventures of Hush, a young female possum, in classic Australian children’s book “Possum Magic” and the story of nine students overcoming hurdles in their final year of primary school in David O’Shea’s award-winning “Class of Nine”.

“I am delighted the Australian Embassy is celebrating International Literacy Day by bringing joy and adventure to children through the Australian Reading Corner. Our collaboration with the Jakarta Library in Cikini is designed to help foster a love of reading and encourage knowledge sharing about Australia amongst children and communities in Indonesia,” said Steve Scott, Chargé d’Affaires, Australian Embassy Jakarta.

35 new Australian books (21 titles) have been added to the Jakarta Library ARC collection to mark International Literacy Day, including children’s books, fashion books, and books on Australia architecture, art, and tourism. SD Kebun Jeruk 10 and SD Santa Ursula Jakarta are part of the Australia-Indonesia BRIDGE School Partnerships Program.
