Indonesia and Australia Advance Low-Emissions Energy Transition

Media Release

4 October 2023

Australia’s national science agency CSIRO hosted a 3-day workshop on ‘Accelerating Transitions to Advanced Low Emission Power Systems’ in Jakarta from 25 to 27 September 2023.

The workshop was another step in implementation of the AU$200 million Australia-Indonesia Climate and Infrastructure Partnership launched by President Widodo and Prime Minister Albanese in June 2022.

The workshop assembled experts from the Global Power System Transformation (G-PST) Consortium, a global initiative that brings together energy experts from around the world to fast-track the transition to net zero, offering evidence-based solutions to shift electricity grids to be powered entirely by renewable energy.

Around 30 senior representatives from Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, National Research and Innovation Agency, Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) as well as participants from the ASEAN Centre for Energy participated in the discussions on key challenges and opportunities faced by system operators and network planners in managing the transition to advanced low emissions power systems.

Energy Strategy Leader for CSIRO, Chris Dunstan said, "A shift to low-emissions power systems in Indonesia is a critical step toward the country’s sustainable energy future. Our collaboration with partners from the Global Power System Transformation Consortium has enabled us to share with Indonesia the range of energy solutions being used in Australia and across the world."
