Celebrating the Australia – Indonesia Education Partnership

Media Release

4 April 2024

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Penny Williams, together with senior Indonesian government officials and Australian universities in Indonesia, celebrated Australia’s strong education partnership with Indonesia at an iftar function on 3 April.

Senior partners from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek), the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), and the Ministry of National Planning and Development (BAPPENAS) joined Ambassador Williams at the event.

“Australia and Indonesia are celebrating 75 years of diplomatic relations this year and education is central to our partnership. From primary school, through to universities, research and innovation, our cooperation in education lays a strong foundation for the close ties between our people,” Ambassador Williams said.

This year, the Australian and Indonesian Governments have launched the third phase of the INOVASI program, a partnership focused on primary school level education. The program works to improve learning and foundational skills for all Indonesian primary students.

“Australia has the largest alumni network in Indonesia. We are proud that Australian universities are leading the way in establishing Indonesian campuses, providing Indonesians with world class Australian education at home,” said Ambassador Williams.

Monash University established the first foreign campus in Indonesia in 2021. Western Sydney University and Deakin University will welcome students to their campuses in Surabaya and Bandung in 2024.

Australia's scholarships program, Australia Awards, is also the longest-running foreign scholarships program in Indonesia. For more than 70 years, Australia has partnered with Indonesia through scholarships to invest in human capital, respond to social and economic development priorities, and create and maintain enduring ties.
