Australia Commends Indonesia’s Efforts to Support Women in Judicial Leadership

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Penny Williams, joined the Association of Indonesian Women Judges for their first international seminar in Jakarta on 26 April.

The Association, established in September 2023, demonstrates the Indonesian Supreme Court’s commitment to support women in judicial leadership. It builds on momentum created by research and dialogue led by women judges and justices.

The Indonesian Supreme Court currently has the highest female representation among law enforcement institutions in Indonesia.  “I congratulate Indonesia on its success promoting women’s leadership in the courts and advancing the welfare of women judges,” said Ambassador Williams during the seminar.

In her remarks, Ambassador Williams shared her experience as the first female Ambassador to Indonesia and in her previous role as the Australian Ambassador for Women and Girls.

Chief Justice Muhammad Syarifuddin underlined the court's commitment to move to a merit-based personnel system where judges can be considered equally, free from policies or behaviours that discriminate against women or discourage them from seeking promotion to leadership roles.

“It is important to remember that a safe, accommodative, and gender-friendly work environment is not only beneficial for female judges but for the entire judicial system and the community,” said Justice Nani Indrawati, inaugural Chair of the Association of Indonesian Women Judges.

The seminar was attended by senior leaders of the courts in Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia and the Philippines. The seminar was supported by the Australia Indonesia Partnership for Justice Phase 2.
