$30,000 assistance for windstorm victims in Jogjakarta

In response to the recent windstorm in Jogjakarta, Australia has distributed more than 10.000 litres clean drinking water, family kits, baby pack, food and lamps worth A$30,000. The Australia Indonesia Partnership (AIP) Community Assistance Program, developed in response to last year’s earthquake, immediately coordinate assistance together with Local Government, UNORC and other NGO’s.

The Australian government is cooperating with 3 local NGO’s : Perhimpunan Serikat Buruh (PSB), Pusat Study Masyarakat (PSM) and Kerabat Desa Kota (KDK) to provide community kitchens in 9 different location. The community kitchens provide more than 8000 food package every day to cover 992 household. They are located in Danukusuman, Jl. Gayam, Jl. Tunjung Baru, Jl. Ki Mangun Sarkoro, Jl. Tegal Lempuyangan, and Jl. Mangkukusuman.

A 70 km/hour windstorm struck four sub-districts (Kecamatan) in the city of Jogjakarta on Sunday, 18 February 2007 around 5.10 pm local time. Local government of Jogjakarta (Pemda) reported 1,086 houses were damaged in Danurejan, Pakualaman, Gondokusuman and Umbulharjo, mostly partial damage to roofs.

Forty-eight people have been reported injured and were sent to the nearest hospital. All had been dismissed on Sunday, except for four persons who remain in hospital care. Gondokusuman was the most affected Kecamatan with 742 houses recorded as damaged.
