Australia comes to the aid of quake survivors in Indonesia

Australia will provide immediate emergency assistance following the earthquake which struck Sumatra overnight. This assistance will help in early impact assessments and provide logistics support.

Australia’s contribution of over Rp 371 million (AUD 50,000) will be channeled through the Indonesian Red Cross.

At this stage, there are no reports the earthquakes have affected any Australians but the Australian Embassy in Jakarta continues to closely monitor the situation and the welfare of Australians known to be in the area.

The Indonesian Government is responding and has so far not requested specific assistance. Senior Indonesian Government officials and United Nations and International Red Cross emergency teams are traveling to Bengkulu.

Australia is in constant contact with the Government of Indonesia and stands ready to provide further assistance if requested.
