Young Indonesian multi-media artist wins Western Australian residency award
A talented young multi-media artist from Bandung has been selected to undertake a prestigious new arts residency program in Western Australia.
Ms Prilla Tania, 27, departs for Perth today (19 September) to take up the two-month residency at the International Art Space Kellerberrin Australia (IASKA) and Fremantle Arts Centre.
“We are delighted Prilla will have the opportunity to expand her creative horizons in Australia. Prilla works in fascinating new media using digital video and photography to express her ideas about the modern world and contemporary Indonesia,” said the Australian Embassy Charge d’Affaires a.i., Ms Louise Hand.
“This is the first time this Western Australian arts centre has hosted an artist from Indonesia. The local artistic community is looking forward to working with and learning from Prilla,” Louise added.
The Australia-Indonesia Institute, an Australian Government initiative, is sponsoring the artist residency program, in partnership with IASKA and the Kelola Foundation.
The program aims to foster creative collaboration between Australian and Indonesian artists in the contemporary visual arts. It will also introduce Australians to the diversity and sophistication of the Indonesian visual arts sector.
IASKA provides Prilla with accommodation and a daily allowance, as well as studio space for her to create new work. She will meet Australian and international artists, curators and arts managers including through attending ‘artopia’ and the Fremantle Arts Festival.
This will provide valuable international exposure for Prilla.
In December 2007, an Australian artist will take up a two-month residency in Yogyakarta. He will be hosted by Cemeti Art House.
