Australia-Indonesia Vocational and Training Symposium

Australian and Indonesian officials, education experts and industry representatives will come together in Jakarta on 7 November to look at ways of raising the profile and quality of skills training for Indonesian workers.

The Australia-Indonesia Vocational Education and Training Symposium, run by Australia’s Department of Education, Science and Training, will review the status of Australia and Indonesia’s Vocational Education and Training systems and consider how training providers can better provide the skills needed by industry and businesses.

Participants will also look at opportunities to develop industry-government partnerships and opportunities for future collaboration and cooperation between officials, training institutions and industry.

According to the Australian Embassy’s Counsellor for Education, Science and Training, Dr Shannon Smith, vocational education and training represented a critical part of the modern workplace and was vital in underlying future economic growth.

“Countries around the world are entering a new phase in the development of their vocational education and training institutions and systems,” he said. “Our common objective is to ensure that the training undertaken by students is of high quality, and that the skills obtained match those required by industry.”

A delegation from the Department of Education, Science and Training in Canberra, headed by Ms Mary Johnston (Manager, Industry Skills Development) and Mr Matt Davies (Manager, Skills), will deliver presentations on the Australian vocational education and training system.

Representatives from Australian states and territories will also discuss the skills-needs of Indonesian and international businesses. A number of prominent Indonesian experts in vocational education and training will also be presenting.
