Australia increasingly more attractive to Indonesian students

Australia has made entry requirements easier for Indonesians wanting to study in Australia as student numbers continue to increase and visa compliance strengthens, Ambassador Bill Farmer said today.

Farmer said this was “great news” for the increasing number of Indonesians wanting to study in Australia and for the long-term health of bilateral Australia-Indonesia ties.

The Ambassador said Australia was keen to build stronger people-to-people links with Indonesia and that the exchange of young people for study was a great way to achieve that.

From July to September this year, there has been a 37 per cent increase in students applying to study in Australia, compared to the same period last year.

This includes a major increase in the vocational (skills) education and English language training sectors.

“Australia is the number one destination for Indonesians seeking to study abroad,” Farmer said. “This is because the quality of Australia’s education system is international-class, and because there are a diverse range of courses that are not available elsewhere.”

“In addition, courses contain practical elements and are oriented towards future careers, and students get to live in a native-English-speaking country,” the Ambassador said.

There are currently about 15,000 Indonesians studying in schools, universities and technical colleges across Australia.

Further details on how to apply for study in Australia can be found on the Australian Embassy website at www.indonesia.embassy.gov.au or the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) website at www.immi.gov.au.
