Australian Governor-General extends condolences on the death of former President Soeharto
Today His Excellency Major General Michael Jeffery, AC CVO MC (Retd), Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia extended condolences to Indonesia on the death of former President Soeharto.
“On behalf of all Australians, I extend our condolences to the Indonesian people on the passing of former President Soeharto,” Major General Jeffery said.
“He will be remembered for presiding over a large and diverse nation for more than three decades during a period of substantial external and internal change. Former President Soeharto was also influential in the Asia-Pacific region, notably in advancing the ASEAN Regional Forum and APEC.”
“As regional neighbours, there are many issues in which Australia has a shared interest with the Republic of Indonesia. The development of our association during and following the Soeharto Presidency has resulted in a positive and friendly relationship, based on a willingness to discuss and resolve issues of common concern,” he said.
“Former President Soeharto’s passing marks a significant chapter in the history of his country. His loss will be felt by the people of the Republic of Indonesia and many people in Australia who share an affection for the nation he led,” said the Governor-General.
