Australia-Indonesia establish Jakarta Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre
The Australian Chargé d’Affaires, Louise Hand, has welcomed the inauguration of Indonesia’s Tropical Cyclone Warning Centre in Jakarta on Monday following close collaboration between the Australian Bureau of Meteorology and its counterpart, the Indonesian Bureau of Meteorology and Geophysics (BMG).
“The implementation of the early warning system has the potential to help save lives and property and increase maritime safety not only in Indonesia, but in the region,” said Ms Hand.
Indonesia’s BMG has sourced weather forecasting software and technology from Australia’s Meteorology Bureau and ongoing technical information exchange during cyclone events is expected to assist BMG in the analysis and prediction process.
“The establishment of a state-of-the-art system in BMG will give Indonesia new capability in forecasting and tracking tropical cyclones,” said Mike Bergin, Regional Director of the Bureau of Meteorology, Western Australia, who is in Jakarta for the Centre’s inauguration.
Indonesia’s Bureau of Meteorology and Geophysics has also welcomed collaboration with Australia in this field.
“The system is most beneficial in providing early warnings for sailing vessels and people living in the coastal area who are directly affected by tropical cyclones,” said T. Mulyono, Head of Data System and Meteorology Information at BMG.
The inauguration ceremony was held to coincide with World Meteorology Day.
