Australian Minister Opens Regional Police Leadership Program at Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation

Australian Minister for Home Affairs Bob Debus today opened a senior policing course at the Jakarta Centre for Law Enforcement Cooperation (JCLEC) in Semarang, Indonesia.

Mr Debus, who is on a four-day visit to Indonesia, said the four-week Regional Executive Leadership Program was designed for senior law enforcement officials from the South-East Asian region to develop personal, organisational and regional leadership skills with a focus on tackling terrorism, transnational crime and building on intelligence and decision-making capabilities.

“This program will develop an alumni of senior police officers who will be able to share their knowledge with their counterparts in other regional police forces,” Mr Debus said.

The JCLEC is an education and training institution jointly managed and operated by the Indonesian and Australian governments, reflecting the strong commitment by both countries to work together to address the evolving security challenges in South East Asia.

Mr Debus said more than 3700 participants from 38 countries had received training in counter terrorism-related courses including investigations, post bomb blast analysis, financial investigations, criminal intelligence, communications, general forensics and leadership since the creation of the JCLEC.

“The JCLEC is a vital component of a joint policing effort to strengthen the capability and capacity of foreign law enforcement agencies to combat criminal threats that are increasingly borderless and multi-jurisdictional,” he said.

The centre has received A$36.8 million in funding from the Australian Government since its inception in 2004.

The Regional Executive Leadership Program is being sponsored by the Australian and British governments.
