Delegation to discuss Montara oil spill shows effective cooperation

An Australian delegation visited Indonesia on 10 November to discuss the oil spill from the wellhead platform at the Montara oil field, located in the Timor Sea. The leak was stopped on 3 November and there is no new oil coming from the platform.

Australian officials have kept Indonesian officials fully informed of developments relating to the oil spill since it began.

“We are committed to discussing the Montara oil spill and any potential impacts with Indonesian authorities in an open and constructive manner. This visit will enable technical experts to exchange information and discuss the next steps now that the leak has been stopped,” said Ambassador Bill Farmer.

In particular, the delegation discussed clean up operations and environmental issues associated with the spill.

Australia will continue to act consistently with international law and our strong bilateral relationship in responding to this incident.
