Study in Australia Climate Change Short Movie Competition Opens in Jakarta

The Australian Embassy in partnership with Perth Education City, The Indonesian Nobel Foundation and The Climate Project Indonesia, is pleased to announce the opening of a short movie competition themed: Climate Change: What does it mean to you and your surroundings?

The Australian Embassy invites high school students from greater Jakarta (aged 15 to 19 years) to submit a short movie (3 to 5 minutes) on any aspect of the theme “Climate Change in my life: causes/impact/solutions”.

The winning team will travel to Perth for five days sponsored by Perth Education City where they will be exposed to the latest developments on climate change, and create another short film on the research studies and technologies available.

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Bill Farmer, said it was important to incorporate such an important topic like climate change into Embassy initiatives.

“The competition aims to encourage high school students to be more aware of climate change - its causes and effects on day to day lives - and efforts that can be undertaken to mitigate the impacts,” Mr Farmer said.

Executive Director of The Indonesian Nobel Foundation, Lukman Niode, said “In this case, young students will see how science and technology have a role in facing climate change problems.”

Mr Mike Ryan of Perth Education City said he was pleased to be involved in this project.

“The message this competition provides students is that climate change starts with a change of thinking, so we naturally wanted to be involved as Perth is a great destination for educating thought and developing knowledge,” he said.

The deadline for submissions is 16 February 2010. Shortlisted applicants will be announced and their movies screened on 24 February with the winner announced during the opening of the Study in Australia exhibition in Jakarta on Saturday 27 February 2010.
