International Commission for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament: "Eliminating Nuclear Threats" - Panel Discussion in Jakarta on 10 February 2010
The Australian Embassy, the Japanese Embassy, the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) will jointly host a panel discussion on the report by the International Commission for Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (ICNND) in Jakarta on 10 February 2010.
The ICNND was established as a joint initiative of the Australian and Japanese Governments in 2008. The ICNND’s report, Eliminating Nuclear Threats: A Practical Agenda for Global Policymakers, is the unanimous product of an independent global panel of fifteen Commissioners, including Ambassador Wiryono Sastrohandoyo from Indonesia.
The report’s detailed analysis, focused policy recommendations, and short, medium and long term practical agendas, address the whole range of issues relating to nuclear non-proliferation, disarmament and the peaceful uses of nuclear energy.
To promote the ultimate goal of elimination of nuclear weapons, and encourage public awareness and debate on disarmament and nuclear non-proliferation issues, Dr Rizal Sukma, Executive Director of the CSIS, will chair a panel discussion on the report in Jakarta on 10 February. The panel will consist of:
- Ambassador Wiryono Sastrohandoyo, the Indonesian Commissioner on the ICNND and a former Indonesian Permanent Representative to the IAEA.
- Professor Dr Dewi Fortuna Anwar, the Deputy Chairman for Social Sciences and Humanities, LIPI, and a former member of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission.
- Dr Hudi Hastowo, Chairman of the Indonesian Nuclear Energy Agency.
The panel discussion will be held at the Diamond Room, Nikko Hotel, Jakarta, at 10am on 10 February 2010. Media representatives are invited to attend. The full text of the report and further background information is available online at www.icnnd.org
