Surya Institute Workshop at Strike A Chord: The Science of Music Exhibition

Dozens of enthusiastic students of SMP 216 and SMP 115 Jakarta today visited the Australian Embassy’s Strike A Chord: The Science of Music exhibition and had the opportunity to learn science through music and sound and participate in pan-flute making workshops.

The educational workshops were run by the Surya Institute in conjunction with Australia's interactive music science exhibition being held at PP-IPTEK, Taman Mini Indonesia, in Jakarta.

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Bill Farmer congratulated the Surya Institute, founded by Professor Yohanes Surya in 2006, for organising the workshop at the exhibition.

“The philosophy of the Surya Institute to reform science and maths education in Indonesia fits in well with Strike A Chord’s aims to promote the fun and relevance behind science through the universal love of music,” Mr Farmer said.

After having fun with science, the students joined a competition on playing music with their own pan-flute as part of the final session of the workshop.

Strike A Chord is an award-winning travelling exhibition from Australia's Science and Technology Centre, Questacon, which will officially conclude on 31 March 2010.

During its four month stay in Indonesia, the exhibition has entertained and delighted more than 100,000 visitors in Jakarta.
