Indonesia Transport Safety Assistance Package – New Funding Announced

Australia and Indonesia will continue the close cooperation on transport safety with the Australian Government announcing yesterday an additional A$14.5 million over four years under the Indonesian Transport Safety Assistance Package.

Australian Minister for Infrastructure, Transport Regional Development and Local Government, Anthony Albanese, said since 2008, Australia has been helping to strengthen the capacity of Indonesian authorities to regulate and enforce higher safety standards within their aviation and maritime sectors. This has involved the training of Indonesian safety inspectors and accident investigators as well as joint search and rescue exercises.

The new funding will build on the progress achieved to date, as well as help in the transfer of critical knowledge, skills and systems relating to transport safety. Together these investments will continue improving safety standards within our region.

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Bill Farmer, said he was pleased to see this highly successful program of cooperation continue.

The funding decision was contained within the Australian Government’s Budget handed down in Parliament on 11 May. The new funding builds upon the A$24 million allocated in 2008. Under the Indonesian Transport Safety Assistance Package, training and advice is delivered by:

  • Australia’s Civil Aviation Safety Authority and air traffic control service provider Airservices Australia working with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and Angkasa Pura I and II;

  • The Australian Maritime Safety Authority working with the Directorate General of Sea Transportation and also with the National Search and Rescue Organisation (Basarnas);

  • The Australian Transport Safety Bureau working with the National Transportation Safety Commission (KNKT); and

  • The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government which is managing two small projects in road safety and public affairs.
