Go Green Journalism Climate Change Workshop

The Australian Embassy in cooperation with the Indonesian Journalist Alliance (AJI) will conduct a Journalism Climate Change Workshop in Jakarta today to provide journalists with a better understanding of climate change and provide practical tools for writing about the issue.

More than 20 journalists will participate in the workshop including journalists from Banda Aceh, Pekanbaru, Pontianak, Lampung, Jayapura, Palangkaraya, Banjarmasin, Manado and Jakarta.

The training will also include presenters from the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)-Indonesia and the Society of Indonesian Environmental Journalists.

“Climate change is a global problem and it requires a global solution. Australia and Indonesia are taking active roles in addressing this issue and the media plays an important part in educating the public,” said Australian Deputy Head of Mission, Mr Paul Robilliard.

“I am pleased we are working closely with the Indonesian Journalist Alliance to conduct this workshop and even more excited that we are receiving such wide interest from Jakarta based journalists as well as provincial reporters,” Mr Robilliard added.

The Secretary General of the Indonesian Journalist Alliance, Mr Jajang Jamaludin, said this type of training is one of AJI’s efforts to improve the professionalism of journalists, especially in environmental issues.

“Due to the increasing amount of information currently circulating, the public requires credible and reliable information. In addition, the obligation of a journalist is to serve the public interest and the issue of climate change is very close to this point,” he said.

Indonesia and Australia share a strong commitment to reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries. A key focus of the partnership between our two countries is taking early action to reduce emissions from forests through practical on the ground activities
