Celebrating 100 years of International Women’s Day
Indonesian female leaders and women empowered through Australia’s development program are being showcased in a photography exhibition, held in Pacific Place Mall, Jakarta from March 7 to 13.
The exhibition commemorates the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day on March 8, and highlights the strength of individual women and Indonesian organisations working to empower women.
The Head of AusAID in Indonesia, Jacqui De Lacy said when opening the exhibition, Australia is committed to supporting Indonesian women’s voices to be heard, and women’s rights to be promoted and protected.
“Australia is taking active measures through its international development program to advance gender equality,” said Ms De Lacy.
AusAID supports women leading change through a range of initiatives, from training nurses and midwives, to improving incomes and access to markets for women living in poor rural areas and ensuring their right to vote and ability to access justice. Australia also provides half of its scholarships to women to study postgraduate qualifications in Australia.
School teachers, healthcare workers and small business owners are being featured in the exhibition as well as prominent Indonesian women, such as Minister Dr. Mari Elka Pangestu and Nafsiah Mboi who is leading the fight against HIV/AIDS.
“Women play a fundamental role in leading change and development. By targeting women as part of efforts to eradicate poverty - children, families and communities also benefit,” said Ms De Lacy.
As part of the celebration, Australia will also host the Advance Women's Leadership Summit in Sydney, 7-8 March. The Summit will highlight the achievements of remarkable women and introduce current and emerging female leaders from the Asia Pacific region, including a number from Indonesia.
