Minister Keenan Statement – Istiqlal Mosque

Well, it’s great to be visiting the mosque and hearing from the Imam about the traditions of this mosque and also of course, the, the important place that this mosque plays in Indonesian national life.

I suppose importantly the message that the Imam has been giving me is the message of tolerance. The fact that Indonesia prizes the fact that it’s a multi-faith society.

And this mosque represents that being such in close conjunction to the Ministry of religious affairs but also the worshiping houses of others institutions such as the Catholic Church.

These are the values, I think, that Indonesia and Australia share; we share tolerance.

We share the fact that we respect the beliefs of others. It’s wonderful to come and see such an important national institution.

And I really appreciate, Imam, you showing me around here today.
