Wheelchair rugby’s Olympic gold medal winning champions will compete against the Indonesian team in a tough battle at the Australian Embassy. The Embassy is pleased to support the Bali Sports Foundation to showcase this exciting Paralympic sport.
Wheelchair rugby is played by athletes with disabilities and is a combination of handball, wheelchair basketball, and rugby with a lot contact between wheelchairs.
The Australian wheelchair rugby team has won back-to-back gold medals at Paralympic Games in Rio this year and in London in 2012.
Two of those gold medallists will compete in Jakarta. Matt "Bomber" Lewis and five time paralympian Nazim "Naz" Erdem who will lead a demonstration game of wheelchair rugby with the Indonesian national team.
The match is a precursor to the first South by South East Asia (SxSE Asia) Cup at the 2016 Tafisa World Games to be held on the 8th and 9th of October at the Jakarta Intercultural School. The Tafisa Games will feature a wheelchair rugby tournament with six countries competing including Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore and Timor L’Este. Australia and Korea will be the mentors for the countries which are competing for the first time.
