A new book featuring the work of several of Indonesia’s emerging Islamic scholars was launched at the Australian Embassy in Jakarta today. Mozaik Kajian Islam di Indonesia is a collection of articles by participants in the Australian Government-supported Partnership in Islamic Education Scholarships (PIES) program.
Under the PIES program, selected participants from Islamic higher education institutions spend a year of their doctoral studies at the Australian National University (ANU) in Canberra to develop their research skills and network with Australian academics.
“This publication reflects the success of the PIES program,” said Australian Deputy Head of Mission Allaster Cox. “Each of the chapters provides a fascinating insight into a range of aspects of Islam in Indonesia.”
The six Indonesian Islamic university lecturers whose articles feature in the book are:
- Syahbudi Rahim from IAIN Pontianak
- Nova Effendy Muhammad from IAIN Sultan Amai, Gorontalo
- Muzaiyanah from UIN Sunan Ampel, Surabaya
- Saparudin from UIN Mataram, Lombok
- Arhanuddin Salim from IAIN Manado
- Iksan Kamil Sahri from STAI Al-Fithrah Surabaya
First run in 2008, the PIES program is supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and coordinated by ANU, in partnership with the Directorate of Higher Islamic Education (DIKTIS) at the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MORA).
