The Australian Embassy in Jakarta held a special film screening today to celebrate the international success of Indonesian short film Kado (A Gift).

Kado recently had its Australian premiere at the prestigious Melbourne International Film Festival, following screenings at the Sundance International Film Festival 2019 and the Venice International Film Festival in 2018.

The 15-minute film was co-produced by acclaimed Indonesian film producer, and Australian alumni, Mira Lesmana. It was directed by multi award-winning director Aditya Ahmad.

Kado explores youth identity in a conservative society and the film follows Isfi as she prepares a birthday gift for her friend Nita.

Sepatu Baru (On Stopping the Rain), another of Aditya’s short films, was screened as a double-bill. It tells the story of a young girl who is determined to stop the rain by practicing an ancient local myth.

An audience of film students and emerging filmmakers also had the opportunity to hear from Mira and Aditya at the screening.

Australia is well-known for its international film festivals, which feature some of the best short films from around the world.

Indonesian filmmakers now have the chance to enter the Flickerfest Australia now ASEAN Short Film Competition and have their film screened at the famous Flickerfest short film festival at Sydney’s Bondi Beach in January 2020.

The competition is open to filmmakers from all ASEAN member countries and finalists will win a trip to Sydney to network with Australian film industry professionals at the festival.
