Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia Returns in Virtual Format

Media Release

4 June 2021

Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia (FSAI) returns to Indonesia this month, 18-27 June, bringing the best of Australian and Indonesian film directly to audiences across the country.

For the first time in its six-year history, Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia will be held virtually – allowing Indonesian filmgoers throughout the archipelago the chance to access top-class Australian and Indonesian cinema free of charge.

Spanning a diverse range of genres, this year’s film line-up is a celebration of stories that highlight Australian history, diversity, and creativity.

Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia opens with the Indonesian premiere of ‘The Furnace’, highlighting the forgotten story of Australia’s ‘Ghan’ cameleers from South Asia, who traversed the unforgiving Australian desert during the Australian gold rush.

The festival will include more of the stunning landscapes of Australia’s South West coast in ‘Jaimen Hudson: From Sky to Sea’, the inspiring documentary following the journey of Esperance man Jaimen Hudson’s photographic exploration of Australia’s pristine oceans, overcoming adversity to follow his dreams.

As usual, Festival Sinema Australia Indonesia will turn the spotlight on the close relationship between Australia and Indonesia in film. This year’s line-up features hit movies by Indonesian Australian alumni, including the critically acclaimed martial-arts saga, ‘Pendekar Tongkat Emas’, and feel-good romantic comedy, ‘Milly & Mamet’.

Moviegoers can also engage their creative energy in one of our three virtual masterclass events – covering animation, film promotion and documentary and drone cinematography. Sahabat FSAI 2021 and Australian alumni Marissa Anita will be joined by a range of Australian film experts to present these live and interactive sessions.

“We are very excited this landmark program can continue despite the pandemic, and that this year cinemagoers can get some real insights on the skills of the art of film making in our professional masterclasses,” said Deputy Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Allaster Cox.

“By delivering the festival virtually, we are able to make sure a bigger audience than ever before has the opportunity to access these wonderful films and masterclasses, safely and free of charge”.
