Media Release
25 October 2021
Australia’s largest Navy ship HMAS Canberra has docked in Tanjung Priok as part of Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2021 (IPE21), an activity conducted every two years throughout Southeast Asia, and designed to improve the Australian Navy’s cooperation with its close partners in the region.
During her visit to Jakarta, HMAS Canberra will host workshops on Humanitarian Aid and Disaster Relief; Maritime Security; and a Subject Matter Expert Exchange on the Hercules aircraft, which are operated by both Indonesia and Australia.
As part of IPE21, Australia delivered a solar-powered desalination plant to Nusa Lembongan, Bali, to help an Indonesian community solve water supply and plastic pollution problems. The plant was transported from Australia using the combined capabilities of HMA Ships Canberra and Anzac.
HMAS Canberra is a Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ship, and is the most capable Humanitarian and Disaster Relief (HADR) assets in the Royal Australian Navy. Weighing 27,000 tonnes and 230 metres in length, the ship is designed to provide medical and humanitarian assistance during regional emergencies with a 40-bed hospital, complete with two operating theatres. Its 200 metre flight-deck can carry up to 12 helicopters. More than 100 vehicles and 7,000 tonnes of cargo can be stored inside.
This year’s iteration of Indo-Pacific Endeavour has seen HMAS Canberra, at times in company with two other vessels from the Royal Australian Navy, HMAS Anzac and HMAS Sirius, conduct port visits to: Malaysia, Thailand, Brunei, Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore, Cambodia, Timor-Leste and Indonesia.
