Media Release

16 August 2022

The Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) CEO Prof Andrew Campbell met with the Indonesian Minister of Agriculture Prof Dr H Syahrul Yasin Limpo SH MSi MH in Jakarta last week to present a Plaque of Appreciation to the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture in recognition of the long-term and mutually beneficial partnership as well as to discuss future areas of collaboration with the Ministry.

“Australia recognises the achievements both countries have made in agricultural research through strong collaboration over many years,” said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams PSM.

“We look forward to new areas of partnership with the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture focusing on reducing poverty and improving food security including the livelihoods of smallholder farmers.”

Since 1983, ACIAR has supported applied research in Indonesia in crops, livestock, forestry, marine fisheries and aquaculture. For example, the introduction of Leucaena taramba forage for cattle feed in West Nusa Tenggara and East Nusa Tenggara provinces has transformed the lives of hundreds of farmers and protected marginal land in both these provinces. Recent projects include research to manage fruit fly damage and improve the quality of mangoes for export.

“This partnership has been facilitated through the Indonesian Agency for Agricultural Research and Development of the Ministry of Agriculture, which has enabled Indonesian and Australian scientists to work together to build the knowledge to support more productive and sustainable agricultural systems,” said Professor Campbell.

In addition to funding research collaboration, ACIAR has assisted many Indonesian scientists to attain their PhD and Masters’ degrees in Australia and mid-career researchers to attend management and leadership courses at Australian institutions to build their capabilities within their own organisations.

ACIAR is the Australian Government’s specialist agricultural research-for-development agency and part of the Foreign Affairs and Trade Portfolio, contributing to Australia’s development assistance program.
