Australia’s key regional engagement activity, Indo-Pacific Endeavour (IPE), has returned to Indonesia – its final stop on a record 14 country journey.
As part of IPE’s extensive program in Indonesia, the HMAS Adelaide today hosted a Women, Peace and Security Seminar for emerging women leaders in Indonesia’s national security sector.
The seminar was an opportunity for participants to hear from Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams PSM, Ibu Meutya Hafid, Chair of Commission I of the People's Representative Council, Ibu Nurul Arifin, Member of the People’s Representative Council, CAPT Philippa Hay of the Royal Australian Navy and CAPT Navy Dr. Renny Setiowati.
Ambassador Williams said, “Australia and Indonesia are champions of the Women, Peace and Security agenda – a framework that promotes women’s equal and meaningful participation in peace processes, peacebuilding and security.”
“As part of this agenda, both our governments have committed to promoting women’s active participation in security agencies and in security-related public service roles,” Ambassador Williams said.
The event coincided with International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, and the commencement of 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence.
“Addressing gender inequality is a necessary step to eliminating violence against women, and a core part of the Women, Peace and Security agenda,” said Ambassador Williams.
The seminar took place on 25 November as part of a full program of events for IPE 2022.
