Australian alumni from the Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP) visited the Ministry for Tourism and Creative Economy this week and learned to cook some Indonesian culinary delights.
Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams PSM, and the Minister for Tourism and Creative Economy Sandiaga Uno, warmly welcomed the AIYEP Alumni to Indonesia and were encouraged by their enthusiasm to understand Indonesian culture and society.
The delegation comprises alumni of the online AIYEP programs held during the COVID-19 period (2020-23). Their week-long visit to Jakarta provides the opportunity to meet with their Indonesian counterparts in person and build on the relationships they formed online.
“The AIYEP program not only fosters mutual understanding between Australia and Indonesia, it also facilitates lifelong connections between our young people, their families, and their communities,” said Ambassador Williams.
“AIYEP plays an important role in supporting the people-to-people links that are at the heart of the Australia-Indonesia relationship.”
Minister Sandiaga Uno was pleased to host this culinary workshop to give the Australian AIYEP alumni a real taste of Indonesian culture. The delegation learnt the secrets of how to cook authentic rendang and nasi goreng from Chef Steby Rafael and Chef Aprizal.
“It’s wonderful to welcome the Australian AIYEP alumni and share the flavours of Indonesia through culinary diplomacy. I hope you all become food ambassadors for Indonesia,” Minister Uno said.
AIYEP is an annual youth program promoting people-to-people links between Australians and Indonesians. It is managed by the Australia-Indonesia Institute, with support from the Australian Government, and delivered in partnership with the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports Affairs of the Government of Indonesia.
