Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams PSM has welcomed partnerships between the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) and six Indonesian universities.
The partnerships were marked by the signing of Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with the six universities by ACIAR CEO Prof Andrew Campbell this week in Jakarta.
‘For more than four decades, ACIAR has partnered with Indonesia to look for solutions to common agricultural challenges through international research,’ said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams.
‘These MOUs will lead to many new joint research initiatives in the years ahead.’
Prof Campbell said past impact assessments had clearly demonstrated that projects were more likely to achieve benefits for farmers, rural communities and policy makers when expert researchers from ACIAR worked in partnership with local experts.
‘I am pleased that ACIAR is able to formalise its partnership efforts with these universities in Indonesia because cooperative partnership is the best way we can tackle current and future challenges,’ said Prof Campbell.
‘ACIAR has worked with Indonesian universities for many years, and we have seen first-hand how their research capabilities have developed. Now with the changes to the Indonesian research and innovation system we are able to have direct agreements with individual universities, which is exciting,’ said Prof Campbell.
The University of Mataram in Lombok, IPB University in Bogor and University of Gadjah Mada (UGM) in Yogyakarta have been long-term partners of ACIAR while Udayana University in Bali, Diponegoro University in Semarang and Sam Ratulangi University in Manado are partnering together for their first ACIAR-supported project in agribusiness.
