Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams PSM today joined the Minister of Public Works and Housing of the Republic of Indonesia Mr Basuki Hadimuljono, to inspect a new wastewater treatment plant in Palembang.

The IDR 1.6 trillion (AUD 160 million) project funded by Australia and Indonesia will provide 8,000 property connections and benefit 40,000 people in its current phase. Upon completion of future phases, 21,700 property connections will be made, benefitting up to 100,000 people.

“We’re pleased to report that construction of the wastewater treatment plant has progressed well since its commencement in November 2020, and is now completed,“ said Ambassador Williams. “This is a great achievement. Access to better sanitation will improve the quality of life for residents in Palembang and will help improve the surrounding environment.”

The Palembang City Sanitation Project has been led by the Palembang City Government through its planning, financing, and construction stages, and will continue to be managed and maintained by the City.

The project delivers a modern sanitation system in Palembang and will improve both community health and the natural environment.

“Successful completion of this project reflects the strong partnership between the Government of Australia, the Indonesian Government, the South Sumatera Province, and the Palembang City Governments,” said Ambassador Williams. “Together we have shown that we can build modern sanitation infrastructure to service the community. Australia extends its appreciation to everyone involved in the project over the last three years.”
