Australian Ambassador Visits Batam

Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams PSM visited Batam in the Riau Islands province from 29-30 January 2024.

During the visit Ambassador Williams attended the grand opening of the Thiess Batam Truck Rebuild Centre to celebrate the opening of the facility as well as completion of the first truck rebuild. This Rebuild Centre will help support local manufacturing capability in Batam and strong regional supply chains. 

“Thiess’s Batam Truck Rebuild Centre is an excellent example of deepening investment and building capacity between Australia and Indonesia in a way that benefits local communities,” said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams PSM. 

“This facility is a demonstration of the long term and strategic commitment that Thiess have made in Indonesia for over 40 years.  They are continuing to build manufacturing capability and skills through training their local personnel to maintain and overhaul sophisticated equipment.”  

While in Batam, Ambassador Williams also visited the Nongsa Digital Park which has partnered with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) to deliver cybersecurity courses in Batam, as well as Austin Engineering’s Batam-based mining equipment site.

“The Indonesian and Australian government are working together to unlock trade and investment opportunities. I am excited to be in Batam to support these endeavours,” said Ambassador Williams.  

Ambassador Williams also met with the Mayor of Batam, Bapak Muhammad Rudi and Ibu Marlin Agustina, the Vice-Governor of the Riau Islands province.
