Australia and Indonesia Strengthen Primary School Education

Media Release

7 June 2024

Australia and Indonesia have launched a new four-year education partnership, INOVASI (Innovation for Indonesia's School Children) to support learning in Indonesia’s primary schools on Thursday, 6 June 2024.

In partnership with the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (MoECRT), the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MoRA), and Ministry of National Development Planning (Bappenas) the third phase of the INOVASI program will support the implementation and roll out of education reforms and priorities.

"As we celebrate the 75th Anniversary of Australia Indonesia Diplomatic Relations this year, we are delighted to expand our partnership in primary school education to more provinces, including now to West Java and Maluku,” said Madeleine Moss, the Australian Embassy’s Minister-Counsellor for Governance and Human Development.

Anindito Aditomo, Head of MoERCT’s Education Standards, Curriculum and Assessment Agency, stated that regional education ecosystems are a tangible form of the spirit of ‘gotong royong’ (mutual cooperation) in education, which was proven during the COVID-19 pandemic. With ‘gotong royong’, Indonesia was able to withstand the loss of learning during the pandemic. “Education is a long-term endeavour. It takes collaboration through the education ecosystem to ensure every child gets the best education services,” he emphasised.

The Secretary of the Directorate General for Islamic Education at MoRA, Rohmat Mulyana highlighted the crucial role of the education ecosystem in enhancing the quality of madrasah. MoRA caters to over 10 million students in 87,000 madrasah spread across the archipelago. Rohmat stressed that strong relationships and collaboration between local stakeholders, including those from the Islamic education sector, supports the Ministry to offer comprehensive, high-quality and equitable education services to madrasah students.

The Australian and Indonesian governments have partnered on the INOVASI program since 2016. The new third phase is valued at AUD 55 million over 4 years (2024-2027) and will support the Government of Indonesia to improve inclusive learning and achievement of foundational skills for all Indonesian primary students.

The program will provide support and training for teachers and education staff at the national and provincial level, such as in North Kalimantan, West Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara, East Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku.
