14 June 2024

The Australian Mission to ASEAN and the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS Indonesia) have officially launched a new research report on ASEAN-Australia relations.

The report, "Comprehensive Strategic Partners: ASEAN and Australia after the first 50 Years", examines the enduring and evolving relationship between ASEAN and Australia. Co-authored by experts from Australia, Indonesia, Cambodia, and Singapore, the report offers an in-depth analysis of ASEAN-Australia relations since Australia became ASEAN’s first Dialogue Partner fifty years ago in 1974.

“The report is a comprehensive stocktake of the ASEAN-Australia relationship over the last fifty years, setting out what Australia and ASEAN have achieved together, and laying out recommendations for the future of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership,” said Australian Ambassador to ASEAN Tiffany McDonald.

Guests from the Indonesian Government, diplomatic corps, ASEAN Secretariat, think tank community and alumni networks came together for an expert panel discussion on the report’s findings and Australia’s relationship with ASEAN and Indonesia.

“Collaborating with such talented co-authors from Indonesia and across the region has given us all a chance to think about Australia’s decades-long engagement with ASEAN in fresh ways,” said report co-author and University of Tasmania Pro-Vice Chancellor, Professor Nicholas Farrelly. “It has sparked policy discussions about our shared futures,” he added.

“The report contributes innovative and crucial thinking on how the partnership between ASEAN and Australia can be further deepened and strengthened in political, strategic, economic and socio-cultural dimensions,” said report co-author and CSIS Indonesia’s Head of Department of International Relations, Dr Lina Alexandra.

The event in Jakarta is the final of a series of launches across Australia, Laos, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia celebrating ASEAN and Australia’s 50th anniversary year.
