New Colombo Plan Marks a Decade of Strengthening Australia Indonesia Ties

Media Release

29 June 2024

The New Colombo Plan (NCP) program, which connects Australian students to the Indo-Pacific region, is marking its tenth anniversary this year. On Saturday, 29 June, the Australian Embassy celebrated this milestone anniversary with NCP students, universities, businesses and other partners in Yogyakarta.

Since its inception in 2014, the New Colombo Plan has provided opportunities for Australian students to undertake overseas study and internship programs, building ties and networks across the region.

Indonesia continues to be one of the most popular destinations for NCP students, with over 12,000 having studied and undertaken internships across the archipelago.

“Connections between people are at the heart of the Australia-Indonesia relationship. For ten years, Indonesia has been a top choice for Australian New Colombo Plan students. They have come here to study or gain work experience and have left with deep friendships and a new understanding of one of our closest neighbours,” said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia Penny Williams PSM.

The NCP program has awarded over 75,000 scholarships and mobility grants to Australian undergraduate students across the region. The program aims to be transformational, deepening Australia's relationships, both at the individual level and through expanding university, business and institutional links.
