Australian fashion designers are participating in the Emerging Designers Bootcamp from 11-25 August in Yogyakarta. Part of the 75th anniversary celebration of Australia-Indonesia Diplomatic Relations, this initiative is led by the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in partnership with the Australian Embassy, the Government of Victoria, and the Yogyakarta Provincial Government.
Australian designers Josh Dean, Nikki Edgar, and Zhao Canwen are taking a deep dive into the art of batik, learning about this culturally significant textile from batik makers in Yogyakarta. The trio made their Indonesian runway debut at Jogja Fashion Week on 22 August, showcasing their collections incorporating batik, made in country during their two-week residency. MoFA Director-General of Information and Public Diplomacy Ibu Siti Mauludiah and Australian a/g Deputy Ambassador Madeleine Moss wore their creations on the runway.
“This program celebrates diversity, creativity and highlights the strong connection between our two countries’ creative communities,” said Australian Charge d’Affaires to Indonesia Gita Kamath.
“Fashion is one of the biggest industries in the world. The unique cultural exchange our Australian designers have had with Indonesian designers in Yogyakarta will encourage future collaboration in this important sector,” she said.
Josh Dean is an emerging Indigenous artist known for vibrant art; Nikki Edgar is known for her ready-to-wear and custom pieces with performative flair; and Zhao Canwen for her striking work in film costumes and illustration.
Australian expert Dr Tassia Joannides, Interim Associate Dean in Fashion and Textiles Design from RMIT University will also share expertise about entering the Australian fashion market at a 23 August business talk as part of Jogya Fashion Week.
