Australia and Indonesia held the first Indonesia Data Hackathon (INDAthon) to enhance policymaking through the use of robust data and quality official statistics in Jakarta from 17–19 September.
INDAthon brought together data analysts, policy analysts, and data scientists from a range of Indonesian government agencies to game out solutions to policy problems using real world data. The event was jointly supported by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, Statistics Indonesia (BPS) and Prospera (the Australia Indonesia Partnership for Economic Development).
“INDAthon emphasises the importance of utilising data for informed decision-making,” said BPS Principal Secretary, Imam Machdi.
“We believe this experience will enrich the capabilities of civil servants to shape evidence-based policies, while promoting innovation in how data is shared and used.”
“The first INDAthon was a great success. It demonstrated how important data is, and the innovative ways it can be used to find new solutions to real-word policy problems,” said Simon Anderson, Acting Minister Counsellor Economic, Investment and Infrastructure at the Australian Embassy.
The winning team, which will be announced on National Statistics Day 26 September, will visit Australia in February 2025 for a capability development mission, further enriching their skills.
The INDAthon was held as part of the Prospera program, which supports strong, sustainable and inclusive economic growth in Indonesia, including fostering strong partnerships between Indonesian and Australian government agencies.
