Australian participants in the Australia Indonesia Muslim Exchange Program visited Jakarta and Yogyakarta from 10 to 20 September 2024 to deepen intercultural and interreligious understanding.
Fostering interfaith dialogue, promoting mutual understanding, and building strong, lasting relationships between Australian and Indonesian Muslim communities, the program combines a four-week online session with a two-week in-person exchange in both countries.
"As Australia and Indonesia mark 75 years of diplomatic relations this year, we are celebrating the strong ties between our people. This program is a unique opportunity for Australians and Indonesians to engage in meaningful dialogue and build lasting relationships," said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Penny Williams PSM.
The Australian delegation is comprised of a diverse group of community leaders, educators, consultants, and government officials. While in Indonesia, the delegates met with their Indonesian counterparts, engaged with major religious organisations, participated in discussions with members of the Indonesian House of Representatives, and collaborated with prominent Indonesian think tanks.
The Australia Indonesia Muslim Exchange Program was established in 2002 by the Australia-Indonesia Institute. The Institute supports people-to-people connections and promotes understanding between Australians and Indonesians through interfaith, education, youth, civil society, media, sport and arts projects.
