Strengthening Australia-Indonesia Agricultural Cooperation

Media Release

21 November 2024

Australian red meat industry services provider Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) and its partner Ausvet, will deliver a biosecurity support program with the Indonesian cattle industry.

The Australian Government has announced a new $300,000 AUD grant to MLA for the Indonesia Biosecurity Support Program. The Program supports cooperation between the Australian and Indonesian cattle industries to strengthen capability to address animal diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) and lumpy skin disease (LSD).

“Australia and Indonesia share longstanding agricultural cooperation and strong industry partnerships. We are continuing efforts together to enhance animal biosecurity capacity in the region,” said Australian Ambassador to Indonesia, Penny Williams PSM.

The new funding will further enhance the strong relationship between the Australian and Indonesian livestock sectors, including by boosting the longer-term biosecurity capacity of the Indonesian feedlot sector.

The funding is intended to support development of an accreditation framework for feedlots with strong biosecurity practices, establishment of an Indonesian-led feedlot consultancy, and extension of a program for biosecurity improvements into corporate dairies.

The Program has previously supported delivery of risk assessments and biosecurity management plans for 33 feedlots in Indonesia, as well as successfully convening workshops for Indonesian industry on implementing cost-effective biosecurity measures.
