Australia-ASEAN Centre for Energy Cooperation Arrangement Signed

Media Release

12 December 2024

Today, Australian Ambassador to ASEAN, Tiffany McDonald and ASEAN Centre for Energy Acting Executive Director Beni Suryadi signed a Cooperation Arrangement to unlock financing for the clean energy transition across the region.

“Australia is committed to working with ASEAN to enhance energy connectivity, resilience and security. The Cooperation Arrangement signed with the ASEAN Centre for Energy is an important step in our shared commitment towards a clean energy future that benefits ASEAN, Australia and our shared region,” said Ambassador McDonald.

Australia and ASEAN share an ambition to tackle climate change, accelerate the net zero transition and strengthen energy security across our region.

“ASEAN’s energy landscape is evolving rapidly. Ensuring that we meet the growing demand for energy in a way that’s secure, accessible, affordable, and sustainable is more critical than ever,” said Acting Executive Director Suryadi. “This collaboration not only accelerates our green energy transition and addresses climate challenges, but also plays a pivotal role in advancing the ASEAN Power Grid initiative, fostering greater regional energy connectivity and resilience.”

Today’s signing unlocks financing for the A$6.9 million Energy Cooperation Package announced by Australian Prime Minister, the Hon Anthony Albanese MP, during the ASEAN-Australia Special Summit in March 2024. The package was announced alongside more than A$500 million in new and expanded initiatives to commemorate the 50th anniversary of ASEAN - Australia relations.

The Energy Cooperation Package will deliver nine priority projects to advance the ASEAN Power Grid, renewable energy, and regional energy policy and planning. The Package will support ASEAN Member States to enhance energy connectivity and market integration to drive greater energy security, accessibility, affordability, and sustainability for all. It is another step towards implementing Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040 as the region transitions towards a clean energy future.
