On 19 December, the Australian Embassy celebrated the 2024-25 Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program (AIYEP) with program participants and alumni.

Every year, Indonesian and Australian AIYEP participants aged 21-25 spend one month in each others’ countries undertaking work placements, homestays, cultural activities and visits to local schools and communities.

Since 5 December 2024, 42 Australian and Indonesian participants have undertaken the Indonesian phase of the exchange program, immersing themselves in a cross-cultural living and working experience in Mataram, Lombok, NTB. This will continue until 9 January 2025.

Prior to travelling to Indonesia, the participants completed the Australian phase of the program, where they experienced Australian culture and engaged in professional placements.

This year’s program holds special significance as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of Australia-Indonesia diplomatic relations.

“The enduring success of AIYEP is a reflection of the strong ties between Australia and Indonesia. By empowering young people from our two countries to engage meaningfully across cultures, this program lays the foundations for a collaborative future,” said Australian Charge d’Affaires to Indonesia Gita Kamath.

AIYEP is an annual program promoting connections between Australian and Indonesian youth through social, professional and cultural exchannge. Participants grow their intercultural skills and international networks through internships, language training, academic workshops and cultural activities.

AIYEP was established in 1982 and is delivered in partnership by the Australia-Indonesia Institute and the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports.
