Indonesian Language Learning Ambassadors (ILLA) Program Expands to More Schools and Universities Across Australia

Media Release

5 February 2025

28 Indonesian scholars will be placed in schools and universities across Australia under the Indonesian Language Learning Ambassadors (ILLA) program, strengthening educational and cultural ties between Australia and Indonesia.

Announced at the Australia-Indonesia Annual Leaders’ Meeting in July 2023, the ILLA program has expanded to include both schools and universities, enriching Indonesian language and cultural learning in Australian classrooms.

"The ILLA program promotes Indonesian language-learning in Australian schools and deepens cultural understanding and personal connections between our two countries," said Australia’s Chargé d'Affaires to Indonesia, Gita Kamath. “It is these close connections between people that underpin the strong relationship between Australia and Indonesia.”

The program connects Indonesian scholars with Australian schools and universities, providing a unique opportunity to engage and foster meaningful cross-cultural connections. Scholars share their expertise in the Indonesian language, culture, and customs while forming lasting friendships in Australia.

Indonesian students currently studying in Australia on Australian-government funded scholarships are eligible to apply for the ILLA program. Scholars from all disciplines are encouraged to participate.
