Australia’s high-level investment mission to Indonesia concluded in Jakarta on 13 February. The mission was the largest to visit the Southeast Asia region since the establishment of the Investment Deal Teams, a recommendation of Invested: Australia's Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040.
39 business leaders from 27 of Australia’s leading investment firms and corporations spent four days exploring business opportunities and meeting prospective partners in Indonesia. They joined the Mandiri Investment Forum, hearing from Minister of Finance, Sri Mulyani Indrawati, about Indonesia’s investment priorities.
The delegates met key business leaders and organisations, including the Indonesia Investment Authority (INA), the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) and the Indonesia Business Council, as well as Minister for Health, Budi Gunadi Sadikin and Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure and Regional Development, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono.
“Australia’s trade and investment relationship with Indonesia is strong and growing thanks to five years of cooperation through our Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement,” said Gita Kamath, Australian Chargé d’Affaires to Indonesia. “Australia is boosting engagement in the region under Invested: Australia’s Southeast Asia Economic Strategy to 2040, including through missions like these, which are so important to both our countries.”
Australia is Indonesia’s 11th largest source of foreign direct investment. In 2024, investment from Australia grew by 34 per cent.
Significant Australian investments in Indonesia were announced this week, including:
- the opening of Western Sydney University’s campus in Surabaya
- a USD 8 million commitment by Australian Development Investments to Indonesian venture capital firm AC Ventures’ Climate Strategy
- a partnership between Orica and Trifita Perkasa for a AUD 20 million factory in East Kalimantan, creating 50 highly skilled jobs in Indonesia.
“The calibre and size of this mission demonstrates how important Indonesia is to Australian investors,” said Professor Jennifer Westacott, Australia’s Business Champion for Indonesia. “I was pleased to lead this mission, as Indonesia is an economy on the move and these Australian investors understand that the timing has never been better to invest in Indonesia.”
