Australian Chargé d'Affaires Gita Kamath and Jakarta Vice Governor Rano Karno launched the Ghost Nets: Awakening the Drifting Giants exhibition at Museum Bahari Jakarta today.
This striking exhibition presents 18 hand-woven sculptures of fish, sea turtles and manta rays, made from discarded fishing nets (ghost nets) created by the Australian Torres Strait Islands artist collective, Erub Arts.
Inspired by the oceans that connect Australia and Indonesia, the exhibition creates a platform to explore a range of shared environmental challenges, including plastic waste reduction and marine conservation.
“This contemporary art exhibition is an impressive representation of Australian creative excellence. It opens a dialogue on the environmental impact of nets and plastic waste – an issue on which Australia and Indonesia work closely together,” said Australian Chargé d'Affaires, Gita Kamath.
As part of the exhibition experience, museum visitors can participate in workshops to create mini rays from fishing nets.
Ghost Nets: Awakening the Drifting Giants will be on show at Museum Bahari until 31 August 2025.
