Australian Chargé d'Affaires Gita Kamath and Claudine Ryan, Executive Producer and Manager Screen Production, ABC Australia, launched the Culture by Design TV series at Salihara Arts Center Jakarta today.
Culture by Design is hosted by Professor Anthony Burke, University of Technology Sydney, and explores the influence that traditions and culture have on design and creative expression.
“Culture by Design is a wonderful opportunity to promote intercultural understanding between Australia and Indonesia. It demonstrates the richness of Indonesian design talent and explores the vital role design plays in our societies,” said Chargé d'Affaires Kamath.
The series features 11 Indonesian artists including Eko Nugroho (multi-disciplinary artist), Dyah Retno Fitriani (ceramics), Josephine "Obin" Komara (textiles), Rinaldy Yunardi (fashion), Hadassah Daniarto (sustainable architecture), Kali Sari (Sarawati paper making), Alvin Tjitrowirjo (furniture), Elora Hardy (architecture), Erin Dwi Azmi (graphic design), Singgih Susilo Kartono (bamboo bikes) and Oleh Realrich Sjarief (architecture).
Professor Burke said, "Culture by Design is a celebration of culture, community and identity coming together in the contemporary work of an extraordinary group of artisans and designers from across Southeast Asia and India."
In conjunction with the launch, Jakarta Arts Institute students engaged with Eko Nugroho, Dyah Retno Fitriani and Professor Burke in a creative masterclass that provided insights into the program and the creative practice behind the artists’ designs.
