1 May 2025

Indigenous Australian performer Ngulmiya Nundhirribala teamed up with renowned Indonesian composer and pianist Ananda Sukarlan and Indonesian soprano Mariska Setiawan for the Gabalandhurra Concert celebrating Australian-Indonesian shared heritage yesterday at Soehanna Hall, Jakarta.

Ngulmiya was awarded the Northern Territory Australian of the Year for his cultural leadership in traditional music and dance. He showcased his musical talents in the Wubuy language, collaborating with Ananda Sukarlan and Mariska Setiawan in celebration of cross-cultural music.

“This traditional and classical music collaboration between Australia and Indonesia is a wonderful way to celebrate our deep and long history. Music has the universal ability to connect people from different cultures and even across time,” said Australian Chargé d'Affaires Gita Kamath.

Ngulmiya’s visit to Indonesia was supported by the Australian Cultural Diplomacy Grants Program, and it builds on the deep cultural and artistic ties between Australia and Indonesia. After Jakarta, Ngulmiya will visit and perform in Makassar and Bali.
